Underwater Video Review

Streamline now has a new technical upgrade to our video recording system that will be débuting at Streamline this summer.  For the first time, we now can record and review each swimmer from four different angles at the same time.  This video upgrade is a vital teaching aid to help swimmers get a better grasp of each stroke’s intricacies.  Through improved understanding, improved technique will be achieved.

Swimmers at Streamline consistently develop their skills because we explain why certain things need focus.  We recognize that swimmers do not always remember instructional suggestions to improve their technique.  That is why we give out personalized Swimgression Reports as a detailed reminder for the swimmers when they are no longer at Streamline.  Numerous cognitive studies have shown that understanding the concepts behind the principle significantly increases the rate of learning.  Further research has shown that these results are especially true with visual learning and motor skills.

This season, Streamline will be using the strengths of visual positive feedback and giving it a technological upgrade.  In the past, swim clinics like ours could only tape the swimmer from one angle which limits a coach’s ability to dissect the stroke; multiple recordings are always needed to see the full stroke.  Also, the single angle further hinders the swimmer’s ability to grasp a three dimensional mental image of themselves in the water.  By understanding the relationship as to why similarities and differences are similar and different, the swimmer will have a better understanding of the complicated movements.  Without an understanding of the stroke, progress of technique is slow.

With these reasons in mind, Streamline has upgraded its underwater video system to using four cameras:  two underwater and two above.  These cameras record and display the swimmers from four different synchronized angles; we can pause, slow down and rewind all four videos simultaneously.  We can also focus on the small details by selecting an angle and enlarging it to the whole monitor.  The four angles assist the visual learning by allowing the swimmer to develop a more detailed mental image of himself in the water.

We are excited about this new technology and its positive effect for each swimmer.   The additional visual positive feedback will produce even stronger improvements in technique as well as increased confidence and enthusiasm for the sport.  We look forward to working with all of you this summer.
